Psoriasis on the face

I want to learn more about facial psoriasis. For the last year, especially in the last six months, I have suffered from a red, swollen, itchy, dry rash on my face. My eyelids, above and below, swell and turn red. I get it about once every other week. I told my rheumatologist and derm. My derm gave me an ointment, but neither has seen it because on appointment days, I am rash-free.

I have even wondered if it could be the butterfly rash of lupus.

Does anyone else suffer?

  1. Ugh, , I'm sorry to hear that you're currently managing facial psoriasis and how frustrating that it seems to clear up every appointment day (isn't that always how it goes!?). I hope some of our community members with experience managing facial psoriasis can chime in and share with you here, in the meantime, I wanted to share several articles from our sister site for psoriasis with you. This editorial has some general information about psoriasis on the face, https://plaquepsoriasis.com/clinical/face-symptoms, as well as this one with specific classifications of facial psoriasis, https://plaquepsoriasis.com/clinical/facial-classified. One two health leaders on that site also wrote about experiencing facial psoriasis that you might be interested in reading, https://plaquepsoriasis.com/living/cope-with-facial-psoriasis, and https://plaquepsoriasis.com/living/face-tips. You are absolutely not alone! Also, have you taken a photo of the rash that you could show the doctors if it isn't present for the appointments? While it can still be hard to determine, having a photo to look at might help them better determine if it's psoriasis or something else. I do hope that you can get some answers, and some relief! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Thank you for the links! I will read them. And yes, I have many red-faced ugly selfies on my phone!😝

  2. What medication are you taking for your PsA? Humira caused me to develop a malar rash that my rheumatologist sent me to dermatology for. Dermatology evaluated it, and said it was rosacea, which I thought was nonsense. None of the treatments they gave me for rosacea worked, but the rash completely disappeared within days of discontinuing Humira, and never returned.

    1. , the psoriasis on my face started this year while I was taking Bimzelx, so I changed to Otezla. It’s red, itchy, tight, dry, and flaky. I also get very swollen and red under my eyes. My derm prescribed ZORYVE 0.3% Topical Cream. It works after 4-5 days. Mt psoriasis on my body has gone away. I just don't understand why it’s on my face now. But this disease is wonky!
